by Jerome du Bois, with Catherine King
We left the comments open on our post Artlink Has RABYZ!, in the forlorn hope of intelligent contributions. Except for Franklin Einspruch's fine tribute (this mighty duo -- damn right!), our only contributor is Cone-oid, with two comments, and she confirms everything we complain about in this blog, and, incredibly, everything we complain about in the very posting she's commenting on. It's as though all she was was "Comments Open," and lunged like a five-sided comedian on a speed-jag who just discovered a microphone. Lemmetellya, folks . . . Oh, her first comment was a compliment:
Catherine & Jerome,
I like reading your blog. From your obvious popularity so do a lot of other readers. I especially like that you are who you are and write what you want and you don't care if anyone else likes it or not! What kind of critic would you be if you didn't.
Oh, we're popular, all right; lock and load. But why should we care that she likes our honesty? Her second comment was not even addressed to us, or our posting, but was a copy of a discussion going on over at that sinkhole Artlink. Given the length of her yadda-yadda, and the nature of our posting, doesn't that seem a bit rude to anyone? Does to us.
To repeat from our earlier post:
Readers, consider the foci of the attention of these Artlink people, some of whose IP addresses we have recorded. If you go down the list of postings between the middle of October and the tenth of November (some of which link to earlier pieces), these artists, college graduates, vital young people, waves of the future, have nothing to say about what we say -- and show -- about:
ghosts
Islam
misogyny
beautiful flower arrangements
stunning photographs
Theo van Gogh's murder
political cowardice in political art
Jeff Falk's terrible StopNLook
Leanos & Esser controversy (though someone copped a block of my stuff for another thread)
Ryan McNamara's whining
our accusations of drug abuse downtown
but most of all, nobody cares, comments, or even questions that certain Artlink members have physically attacked us, and threatened us verbally with mutilation and death.
And neither does Cone-oid, too busy going on and on and on, like some ragnose tarbaby, about her gallery and her life and her plans. She says not a single word about anything specific we do, have done, believe, or write; she's too involved in her own wonderfulness. She's not part of Artlink -- though with her smiley heartlessness she fits right in -- but she chews up their bandwidth, too.
And speaking of the last point above -- our being attacked by an Artlink board member -- I have noticed that Artlink has closed down non-registered comments on the thread (probably because the truth hurts) so we will reply here. First, though, let us note that an anonymous post on that thread -- anonymity is epidemic over at Artlink -- big surprise from cowards -- this note said that NO current member of Artlink has physically or verbally attacked us; supposedly, most of them don't even know who we are. Uh-huh. Here's Catherine's reply:
For your information, we did not file a police report because I wanted to deal with it in my own time, and my own way. As for the details about what happened, it's nobody's business but our own.
Catherine King.
Clear it up any?
And I wish I could thank Cone-oid for a perfect example of the kind of solipsistic, completely self-involved mentality endemic to this town, but Catherine and I have a business meeting to prepare for.
Posted by Jerome at November 22, 2004 11:47 AM | TrackBackIt's your blog, Jerome and Catherine. You can post anything you want, and since it's still a free country, people are free to read it or avoid it. Anyone complaining otherwise is a member of the Victim State, and should be given crates of 100-grit sandpaper to toughen his or her skin. What has happened between you and Artlink is deplorable but private business -- until you decide to file that police report, and I get summoned for jury duty. I may not always agree with your conclusions, but I find them educational, inspiring, and often entertaining. Which is more than I can say for most of the Artlink sites. I treasure your literacy, your creativity, and the passion with which you share
it.
I do wonder at your continued tilting at these
particular windmills. I hold many of the same
opinions of Artlink and the downtown art scene,
but I don't have the time or energy to try changing it. Well-intentioned but gormless folks
who whine about the downtown reaction to their 'serious' galleries and art haven't done their homework. While some of them are friends and ex-coworkers of mine, I really don't give a flying ferret's ass what most Artlink members think of me and my art. I'd prefer they don't think of me at all, and I largely return the favor. There's a world of art, collectors, and intellectuals out there beyond central Phoenix.
So, why the effort of ramming repeatedly into this one brick wall? Is it because you live down here among the hoodlums and the sham-glam, and so have a vested interest into civilizing it? If so, then kudos to a worthy goal. I hope the two of you are not fighting this battle because you've convinced yourselves there is no other venue for your art and your opinions, that this little pond is _it_.
There's room on the web for you, and room in the wide world, and lots of readers who aren't in Phoenix. I, for one, enjoy Catherine's
flower photos, and I am damned glad to find out
there are other people in this Valley who have
a personal library.
Warmest regards,
Marian Crane

"Birds of a feather" and all that!
To quote a friend of mine,
"That's right, and I should be self centered. I love myself more than anything else on planet Earth. After myself, I love my wife and kids second. Then there's a whole rating and critique process I go by. So,you must really fall low on my list. Sorry." RB.
You two are hilarious! *g
This is not true. I sent an email with sincere concern for your well being after I heard about your being attacked. Catherine questioned its sincerity. You are mistaken.
