UNHEALED SPIRIT

As promised, I'm delivering my annual floral tribute to the victims, both living and dead, of the Islamist Terror Attacks of September 11, 2001. My UNHEALED series acknowledges the painfull persistence of post-traumatic stress.

Above you see UNHEALED SPIRIT, the third in this dolorous little collection. Here is the first, UNHEALED, which used the darkest red, driest, scabbiest looking flowers I could find. The arrangement took on the appearance of a broken, but still beating, heart.

As I was getting ready to put together last year's tribute, Hurricane Katrina struck the Gulf Coast and set me reeling. And so UNHEALED II became UNHEALED, TOO. For this piece, I constructed a jumble of rubble with roses of many colors, symbolizing a rainbow of human souls, trapped inside and perishing.

Spirits came to visit me and watch over my floral arrangement this year, as I knew they would. I realize that I have displayed my dark mood for all to see. But I also know that no matter how hard things get, I will continue to make my art. And so I give you UNHEALED SPIRIT . . .

spirit: temper or disposition of mind or outlook especially when vigorous or animated; a lively or brisk quality in a person or person's actions; a mental disposition characterized by firmness or assertiveness.
